Steven Van Hecke

Steven Van Hecke studied philosophy and political science at the universities of Leuven (Belgium) and Hull (UK). He obtained a PhD is social sciences at the Catholic University of Leuven. He was a senior research fellow at the University of Antwerp, a visiting fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies of the European University Institute (Florence, Italy) and a senior research fellow at the Leibniz-Institut für Europäische Geschichte (Mainz, Germany). He is also a non-resident visiting fellow at the European Parliament Research Service.

He is currently associate professor in Comparative and EU Politics at his alma mater in Leuven where he is also the Chairman of the Wilfried Martens Fund. His research and publications are on European political parties (such as the European People’s Party), EU institutions and European integration history. He recently published (as co-author) ‘Why Europe? An Integration History from A(denauer) to Z(elenskyy)’ (LannooCampus 2023) and (as co-editor) ‘The Cambridge History of the European Union’ (CUP 2023). He also regularly comments on EU affairs in the Flemish media.
