Tobias Billström is the First Deputy Speaker of the Riksdag, the Swedish Parliament. He was elected as a member of parliament for the Moderate Party of Sweden in 2002. In 2006, he was appointed Minister for Migration and Asylum Policy in the Reinfeldt Government, at the Ministry of Justice.
For a period of time in 2010, he was also Minister and Head of the Ministry of Employment. When the Government resigned following the elections in 2014, he had been the longest serving Minister for Migration and Asylum Policy in Sweden’s history and he was the longest serving minister in the EU’s Justice and Home Affairs Council.
Tobias Billström served as Vice President of the European People’s Party (EPP) from 2012 to 2015. His focus has been on issues concerning justice, security and freedom for European citizens. His commitment also extends to the European neighbourhood, both to the south and the east. He is presently the Deputy Chair of the Swedish Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
Tobias Billström has a Master of Philosophy in Historical Studies from Cambridge University, and a BA in History, Political Science, Modern International History and Eastern and Central European Studies from Lund University. He is the holder of the Grand Cross (Grã-Cruz) of Ordem do Infante D. Henrique, The Republic of Portugal and the Order of Stara Planina, 1st Class, The Republic of Bulgaria.
