2024 Christmas Letter

Dear Friends,

As 2024 draws to a close, I would like to reflect on a year marked by significant political challenges. The ongoing war in Ukraine, with its devastating impact on the region and the rise of a more assertive authoritarian bloc, has underscored the urgency of stronger European unity. The Draghi Report further highlighted critical shortcomings in our economic and security posture, while the recent US elections have emphasised the need for a stronger European defence pillar within NATO. These converging challenges demand a decisive and united response from the European Union.

Despite facing significant challenges, the Martens Centre has had a productive year. We were happy and proud to work alongside the EPP and its President Manfred Weber to help provide ideas for and help shape the EPP’s 2024 manifesto, contributing to the centre-right conversation in Europe. As we celebrate these achievements, we remain vigilant against the growing influence of illiberal right-wing parties. We will continue our efforts to counter this trend.

Our intense and dynamic activities—comprising research, numerous collaborative projects with our member foundations and partners, and robust communication efforts—have significantly amplified our impact at both the EU and national levels. The inaugural Global Synergy Conference fostered a truly global dialogue on sustainability. Our annual flagship European Ideas Forum provided a platform for the first public appearance of newly appointed Commission Executive Vice President Virkkunen and Commissioner Kubilius. Our strategic 7Ds publications have catalysed interest, stimulated dialogue, and inspired action. Notably, ideas and recommendations from the 7Ds Defence – Extended were incorporated into both oral and written responses during Commissioner Kubilius’s European Parliament hearing. Furthermore, our proposal for the White Paper on the Future of European Defence received high praise from the Commissioner.

These achievements are a testament to the exceptional dedication and unwavering commitment of our entire team. I am also immensely grateful to our dedicated network of experts, researchers, and member foundations and partners for their invaluable contributions and unwavering support throughout the year. Your insights and expertise have been instrumental in shaping our mission.

As we approach the holiday season, I extend my sincerest wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year filled with peace, joy, and prosperity.

May the coming year bring renewed hope for a brighter future for Europe and the world.

With sincere appreciation,

Mikuláš Dzurinda

President of the Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies
