The European Parliament (EP) has long been a unique political arena, where cooperation between core groups—the Socialists, Liberals, and Christian Democrats—has shaped its institutional and political dynamics. As the EP prepares for its tenth legislative term, the shifting seat shares and evolving intergroup relations pose critical questions about the future of coalition-building, particularly for the European People’s Party (EPP). In this context, the Martens Centre is hosting an event to mark the launch of a timely publication examining these trends and their implications for the EPP’s strategies moving forward.
This event will explore the historical evolution of intra-parliamentary cooperation and its divergence from national parliamentary practices. It will delve into the resilience of the EP’s parliamentary core despite challenges, using newly developed indices that highlight its enduring relevance.
