Samuel Crooks

Intern

Prior to his internship at the Martens Centre, Samuel studied the MPhil Modern European History and BA Modern and Medieval Languages at the University of Cambridge (Downing College). His academic interest in European affairs was particularly developed through his undergraduate dissertation on Konrad Adenauer’s foreign policy 1949-1963 with a focus on Westbindung. At Master’s level, Samuel researched the role of the Prussian military establishment and right-wing paramilitaries within German domestic and foreign policy 1916-1923, and retains a strong interest in security foreign policy topics. In addition, Samuel spent his Erasmus year at Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, taking modules in medieval studies, German literature, history and Scandinavian studies.

Samuel has also engaged for several years with European and international affairs in his free time. As an undergraduate student, Samuel served as Speakers Officer at Cambridge University United Nations Association 2019-2022. He subsequently joined the Institute for a Greater Europe in September 2022 and has since served as Events Officer and subsequently Events Manager. Samuel was Head of Group for the Institute’s delegation to the European Youth Event 2023 as an activity organiser for the workshop “EU 2050: Designing Our European Future” at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The workshop featured participation of MEPs from several parties and covered diverse EU policy issues. Samuel furthermore enjoys reading and is a keen musician. Originally from Northern Ireland, Samuel is a dual Irish/British national and speaks fluent German and French in addition to his native English.
