Martin Poppe

Martin Poppe joined the Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies as a trainee in September 2026.
Originally from Germany, Martin studied Economics, Politics and Ethics in Italy at the Free University of Bolzano-Bozen and at the National Sun Yat-Sen University in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
He is interested in European Identity, Diplomacy and cultural soft power to deepen his understanding of Europe’s place in the world. During his time in the Indo-Pacific, he developed interest in Asia, particularly China’s role for global security. Before the Martens Centre, he interned at the Representation of the Free State of Bavaria to the EU and worked on agriculture and trade affairs.
He received student scholarships from the Hanns Seidel Foundation, Villa Vigoni, and the “Taiwan-Europe Connectivity” scholarship from Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Besides German, he is fluent in Italian and English. He is currently learning French.
