Anthony Teasdale

Anthony Teasdale was Director General of the European Parliamentary Research Service (EPRS), the in-house research centre and think tank of the European Parliament in Brussels, from November 2013 to June 2022. He is now a visiting professor in practice at the European Institute of the London School of Economics (LSE) – where he convenes a weekly seminar on EU politics and decision-making – and an adjunct professor in the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) at Columbia University in New York. He has previously served as Special Adviser to a British Foreign Secretary (Sir Geoffrey Howe) at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and to a Chancellor of the Exchequer (Kenneth Clarke) at HM Treasury in London, as well as working in the general secretariats of both the EU Council of Ministers (on the Ecofin Council) and the European Parliament in Brussels. His latter positions include serving as head of policy strategy and legislative planning for the EPP Group in the Parliament; coordinator for EP governing bodies in, and deputy head of, the private offices of successive Presidents of the Parliament (Hans-Gert Poettering and Jerzy Buzek); and director for EU internal policies in the Parliament’s administration, supporting the work of parliamentary committees. A former research fellow of Nuffield College, Oxford University, he was educated at Balliol and Nuffield Colleges, Oxford University, where he took a first-class degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) and a MPhil in Politics. He is co-author of ‘The Penguin Companion to European Union’ (880 pp, 2012) and author of various articles on EU politics and decision-making, and on British and American politics.
