Book Launch: The European Peace – Keeping Peace In the Age of War

This event will be livestreamed here and on Youtube.

For decades, European integration has been closely associated with an unprecedented achievement: transforming a continent marked by war and division into an area of peace, cooperation and political integration. Yet today, with war once again raging on the European continent, growing geopolitical competition, pressure on democratic institutions, and a renewed enlargement process, the foundations and meaning of the “European peace” are being tested.

Bringing together leading European political figures, scholars and practitioners, The European Peace examines how peace was constructed in post-war Europe, the institutions, political practices, and societal transformations that sustained it, and the challenges it now faces. Contributors to the volume include Herman Van Rompuy, Alain Lamassoure, Ana Palacio, Philippe Van Parijs, Klaus Welle, Federico Romero and other distinguished European thinkers and practitioners.

The book explores the historical and security foundations of the European order; the role of law, institutions, political traditions, memory, and reconciliation; the EU’s development as a peace actor; and the implications of war, geopolitics, and enlargement for the future of European integration.

The Brussels presentation will bring together contributors and senior European political figures for a discussion on a central question: What does preserving and redefining European peace require in today’s geopolitical Europe?
