Anna-Maria Kountouri is a licensed lawyer and advocate in Court as of July 2013. She has worked for several law firms in Athens. Before this, she pursued her studies at Westminster University (Bachelor degree LLB) and in London Metropolitan (Master degree LLM). Her Master degree was in EU law and her dissertation was awarded with distinction and it was considered quite original in the EU field of human rights, as it dealt with the relation between the ECHR and the Charter of Fundamental Rights and the case-law relevant applications by the Strasbourg Court and the ECJ.
In parallel to her academic studies and short professional engagement, she volunteered with certain NGOs, i.e. the Smile of the Child Association, UNICEF, Actionaid and the Heart of the Child Institute by providing legal advice and assistance to the recipients of the respective organisations. Prior to joining the Martens Centre, Anna-Maria worked at the European Parliament in the office of a Greek MEP and got familiarised with all the procedures and policies of the Parliament, in particular the LIBE, FEMM and TRAN Committees. Her tasks involved research methodology, publishing articles and reports, as well as gaining expertise in matters such as fundamental rights, women and gender, immigration issues and other significant topics dealt with by the EU.
Anna- Maria speaks Greek, English and French (intermediate level). She enjoys greatly being in a dynamic, multicultural and multilingual environment and is strongly interested in pursuing a career in EU affairs.
