On Wednesday, May 8, 2013, the Centre for European Studies together with the Jože Pucnik Institute hosted a business debate about the challenges that the Slovenian economy is currently facing. The key speaker, Mr. Toni Balažič, CEO of Mercator shared his vision about managing the biggest Slovenian company and one of the biggest retailers in the region (over 24,000 employees). The company was, just like other companies from the Slovenian private sector, badly hit by the economic downturn, coupled with past mismanagement. Mr. Balažič shared his critical views on the government's proposed measures to tackle the crisis, including a VAT increase and the recapitalisation of banks. Being the youngest CEO of a major company in the region and a role model for many aspiring managers, he also shared useful insights regarding career planning. The business debate was attended by over 120 leading Slovenian businessmen, politicians, members of academia and young professionals.
